Fred Pratt Green (1903 - 2000) served many Methodist churches across England. Upon retirement in 1967, he served on a committee planning a hymn and song supplement to the Methodist hymnal. This triggered his own interest in writing and so launched a 2nd career resulting in nearly 300 hymns. He is considered one of the most important hymnists in the 20th century (since Charles Wesley). His writes of the redemptive power of God's love.

This hymn, written in 1968, cautions the church about being blind to the injustice, hunger and hopelessness around us, calls the church to be a servant church, to partner in Christ's sacrifice and be clothed in Christ's humanity. Our mission is to serve our Lord, care for all and spread his liberating word.
